Background Link: Since the let's play is still ongoing, but spoilers are out, I'll try to keep those to a minimum and share information people should already know. I've spoiled myself as far as Monobear is concerned, sadly, but I think I'll have a good grasp of his character. At any rate...
A prestigious high school, Hope's Peak Academy, has invited students with “super high school level” abilities that would later be the hope of the nation. This academy was built with just about every facility needed to enrich a student's life and education. It was expensive, to be sure, but well worth the costs to support those that would soon lead Japan into the future. Of course, at some point along the way, Hope's Peak came into a spot of trouble. What exactly that was is unknown, but it allowed the enigmatic Monobear to enter the scene. The events prior to the game allowed him to chase off the rest of the faculty so that he could assume the role of the academy's Headmaster. As the fifteen students of the academy are gathered together in the auditorium, Monobear immediately locks up the entire school, beginning his game.
Monobear laid down a few rules to his new pupils. The first was that nobody could leave. Their new, eternal lives will begin inside the academy. The only way to leave, however, is through “graduation”. Graduation in this case means that a student must kill another and get away with it without anybody finding out. After a murder takes place, a trial will be held to determine which of the fifteen committed the killing. If the majority votes incorrectly, then they will all be sentenced to execution while the true murderer can graduate. The last rule was that nobody may harm the Headmaster which he put to good effect. When Mondo grabbed him, as a demonstration, Monobear detonated himself... showing that he's just one copy out of many other Monobears that are built at a “special, secret location”.
To incense the students into murdering one another, Monobear gave “motives” including revealing characters' secrets, showing pictures of their families and friends dead, and offering a tremendous amount of money. In time, Monobear reveals that his only reason for orchestrating this “game” is to show the students the true meaning of ultimate despair.
Personality: The highlight of Monobear's personality comes from his sadism. He enjoys watching as people turn against one another, seeing it all as a grand spectacle and entertainment than atrocities. His goal is to make people understand the true meaning of ultimate despair. He hates anything resembling “hope”, seeing it as a completely useless and utterly boring concept. While he himself isn't inclined to outright attack people, he simply enjoys setting up the right conditions and giving people reasons to kill one another. Really, it's all more fun that way. And it gives him something to watch as he drinks.
Even so, Monobear is a bear of his word. Cruel as he is, he has always been dead honest about his threats. He withholds information, but doesn't necessarily lie either. Should anybody break one of his rules, he doesn't see the need to give out any second chances. He would immediately cut right to the chase and inflict the penalty. As much as a person may dislike him, Monobear is surprisingly reliable in that one could probably trust a fair amount of what he says to be truth. After all, really, what does he have to hide? He's just a cute little bear.
Monobear revels in speed. He believes that fast food is superior to fine dining and weekly manga is always more entertaining than monthly manga. Everything must be done accomplished quickly to him. Monobear, unlike more patient villains, wishes to see results as quickly as possible and for a long period of time to keep his show going. He gets easily bored if there is too little progress in a span of time, hence why he gives motives to his students. Just the same, Monobear becomes angry whenever people always ask “why” to him. Why does he have to kill everyone? Why can't he just leave everyone alone? All of these are absolutely useless questions as “reasons” are, in the end, useless as well. Useless questions or anything that wastes time has no place in his murder games.
In a casual scenario (if there ever could be one), Monobear is often times foul-mouthed, but enjoys covering that up with a cutesy attitude. He refers to most people as “you bastards”, but always plays the innocent act whenever people call him out on anything. Whenever people express dislike for him, he feigns sadness and wonders why anybody would dislike a cute, innocent bear like him. On the opposite side of the coin, he's prone to laughing loudly at the expense of others regardless of what they might feel. It might be true that Monobear is simply psychopathic to the point that he believes people should like him no matter what he does. He does seem to receive well to compliments and polite behavior anyway.
Abilities: Monobear, being a robot, has a self-destruct function built inside of him. He can explode, but another would immediately replace him. That probably goes hand in hand with his ability to disappear and reappear however he likes. Monobear also appears to possess a form of superspeed. At least, he can move fast enough to make it seem as though there are at least two of him in the same spot. Monobear also has a penchant for designing and creating improbable traps. One of them is his “summoning magic” which notably summoned “Gungnir the Spear” in the form of several metal poles to pierce through a person. He's particularly good with machinery as well.
